I gave the box a break for the first couple days to see which way the bees were going to move. I opened the box to find they had moved to the side where I placed the colony with the queen, the numbers together looked good so I moved the frames and feeder around to give better access to more frames. I noticed there wasn’t much pollen available in any of the frames so I swapped out a frame and put in a frame with pollen from another colony. This combined with the feed should help with brood production and get numbers back up and ready for the upcoming spring.
The thermostat for the seeding mat has a read out showing what the temperature is in the box.
The seeding mat is working well and the thermostat is great in letting me know what the temperature is in the box at different times of the day.
This is still a very small colony it is hard to imagine that there were fewer bees when this began.
In checking back the next week I found encouraging results with a cluster of cells containing larva, which is great to see a potential future for this colony. Still not out of the woods yet but there is hope for a future at least now for these bees.
The original layout had the feeder in between the frames as I combined the 2 small colonies. I have not been a fan of the in hive feeders because of how many dead bees I would find floating in the trough. This style is a wonderful improvement with the wood cover and plastic ladders that allow the bees great access to the feed.
